Energy Audits

What is an Energy Audit?

An Energy Audit is a comprehensive assessment of your home or business’ energy use, identifying problem areas and developing a plan to reduce or stop energy loss. Smart Home Services uses state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and equipment to determine where and how energy loss is occurring. Our BPI and HERS certified auditors will inspect your house or building from top to bottom and provide you with a personalized report, detailing our recommendations to make your work or living space more healthy, comfortable and affordable.

Step 1: Initial Interview

First, we conduct an interview to collect background information and historical data on your home or building. We will also discuss any existing energy or ventilation problems and listen to your concerns, goals or plans that you have for your home or business.

Step 2: Outdoor Inspection

Our trained and certified auditors will examine the exterior of your home or building, performing a comprehensive evaluation of doors, windows, overhands and skylights. We take into consideration the orientation of your home or building along with any vegetation that affects shade and windbreak.

Step 3: Indoor Inspection

Our interior inspection is broken down into two parts: Main Level & Basement and Upper Floors. When examining the main level and basement of the home or building, we are looking at the thermostat, furnace, water heater, basement wall and band joint insulation, ducts, windows, doors, flooring, washer hoses and all appliances. The evaluation of the upper floors includes an examination of the attic, lighting, insulation/ventilation, windows, doors and skylights.

Step 4: Blower Door and Infrared Tests

Blower Door Test - The blower door test uses special diagnostic equipment to measure the air tightness of a home or building. This will determine where any air leaks are occurring and what the amount of air leakage is. This test can also check for indoor air quality issues.

Infrared Thermal Image Scan - Using a special camera, our auditors are able to take a picture of your home or building and determine its hot or cold spots, easily identifying areas of the house where insulation and air sealing need improvement.

Step 5: Review Results

Your Smart Home Services consultant will review the preliminary findings with you so that you have a general idea of where you can make improvements. The data is taken back to the office where it is analyzed and compiled into a formal report that outlines the specific steps you can take to make your home or business more energy efficient.
